Two things decide whether a smart lock is a good purchase. Whether your door closes properly on its own, and whether you picked the right connectivity for how you live.
The Door Comes First, Especially in This City
A smart lock cannot fix a bad door. If the frame has warped or the latch is misaligned so the door does not pull fully closed, the bolt cannot engage, and no amount of technology changes that. It is the most common cause of a smart lock that grinds, jams, or reports itself locked when it is not.
Why this matters here more than in most places. Wichita County sits on expansive clay. It swells with spring rain and shrinks through the long dry summers, and the active layer runs ten to fifteen feet down. As the ground moves, the frame distorts slightly, and a door opening that was a clean rectangle becomes very slightly skewed. Seasonal movement under about three quarters of an inch is considered normal for a Texas home on this soil. A quarter inch at the strike is enough to stop a bolt.
The median home in Wichita Falls was built in 1972, and a large share of the south side is a rebuild from the years after the 1979 tornado. Both predate post tension slab design becoming common here, and older conventional slabs move more.

• Codes you can give out and then delete, which is the big one for cleaners, contractors, dog sitters and family
• A record of who came in and when, on most models
• Remote unlocking, useful for a delivery or a neighbour
• Auto locking, which solves the actual security problem in most households, since the common failure is a door left unlocked rather than a lock being defeated
• Temporary codes on a schedule, which matters for short term rentals
What it does not give you.
• Better physical security by default. A smart lock is a deadbolt with a motor and a radio. The bolt, the strike and the door frame do the security work, exactly as before
• Protection from a kicked door. That is a strike plate and three inch screws into the frame stud, not electronics
• Freedom from maintenance. It is now a device with a battery and firmware
The honest summary. A smart lock is a convenience and access control upgrade. If your goal is purely to make the door harder to force, the money is better spent on a Grade 1 deadbolt and reinforced strike plates.
Wi-Fi, Thread or Bluetooth, and Why Battery Life Depends On It
This is the technical choice that determines how much you will curse the lock, and almost nobody explains it at the point of sale.
Matter over Thread. A low power local mesh. It works natively in Apple Home, and critically it keeps working when your internet goes down, because the communication is local rather than through a cloud. The battery difference is substantial: a Thread lock runs roughly a year where the same model on Wi-Fi lasts months. Roughly double.
Wi-Fi. Works without a hub, which is simpler to set up, but remote access depends on the cloud, so an internet outage takes your remote features with it. Batteries drain faster because the radio is doing more work.
Bluetooth only. Cheapest and longest battery life, but you have to be at the door. Remote features need a separate hub.
What this means practically. If you want remote access and long battery life, Thread. If you want the simplest setup and do not mind changing batteries more often, Wi-Fi. Some locks let you choose, including the Schlage Encode Plus.
Matter is the standard worth caring about in 2026. It lets a lock work across Apple, Google, Amazon and Samsung without separate bridges, and Matter over Thread models are now widely available. Kwikset’s Aura Reach brought the first one under $200.
If you have no hub at all, be aware some locks need one. The Aqara U200 supports Apple Home Key but requires an Aqara hub for the initial setup, even though it talks over Thread afterwards.
Pick by Ecosystem, Not by Brand
Native integration is smoother than cross platform every time, so start with the phone in your hand rather than the box on the shelf.
Apple household. Schlage Encode Plus is the strongest fit, with Apple Home Key tap to unlock that works even if your phone battery is flat. Level Lock Pro also runs Thread with Home Key.
Google household. Yale Assure Lock 2, which is the most refined of Yale’s line and covers all the major platforms.
Amazon and Alexa household. August, which integrates directly with Ring doorbells.
Cross platform or future proofing. Aqara U200 or a Matter over Thread model, so you are not locked to one ecosystem later.
Short term rental. Look for strong temporary code management. Yale and Schlage both handle it well.
Unlock Methods, and the Truth About Hands Free
Keypad code. Universal, reliable, works with no phone. This is what most people use most of the time.
Phone app. Fine, slower than people expect, and useless if your phone is dead.
Apple Home Key or NFC tap. Tap the phone or watch to the lock. Genuinely quick, and on Apple it works even with a flat phone battery.
Fingerprint. Fast and popular. Kwikset Halo Touch and Ultraloq U-Bolt Pro both have readers. Worth knowing that fingerprint readers struggle with wet or very dry hands, and a Wichita Falls summer produces both.
Hands free UWB, which is mostly not real yet. Only two locks ship ultra wideband in 2026, the Aqara U400 and the Ultraloq Bolt Mission. Only the U400 feeds UWB into Apple Home Key Express, so only it actually unlocks as you walk up on an iPhone. The Ultraloq has the hardware but its UWB does not drive Home Key Express, so on Apple you still tap, and the UWB only functions through the manufacturer’s own app. UWB also needs an iPhone 11 or newer.
If somebody sells you a hands free smart lock in 2026, ask which of those two it is and which phone you have.
Physical key backup. Most models keep one. Some, like Level, hide it. Decide deliberately whether you want a keyway at all, because losing the key option means a dead lock is a locked out household.

One market caution. Tariffs have been pushing hardware prices up, and a CNET survey found 87 percent of shoppers concerned about tech price rises. If you have been putting off a purchase, the trend is not in your favour.
Where you can save. Buy the lock yourself and pay labour only. Most smart locks fit a standard bore, and a technician charging $100 to $200 to fit and set up hardware you supplied is a reasonable deal, particularly if the same visit includes sorting the strike.
Renting? Read This Before You Buy
Get permission first. Changing a lock on a rental normally needs the landlord’s agreement, and you will usually have to supply them a working key or a code.
Retrofit units are the renter’s answer. An August or an Aqara retrofit fits over the inside of your existing deadbolt and turns the thumbturn with a motor. The original cylinder stays, so the landlord’s key keeps working, nothing is removed, and there is nothing to restore when you leave. Yale’s Approach line is aimed at apartments for the same reason.
Texas law is relevant here in a way people miss. Texas Property Code § 92.156 requires a landlord to rekey a security device operated by a key, card or combination at the landlord’s expense within seven days of each tenant turnover date. A keypad smart lock is a combination device. So if you moved into a rental with a keypad lock and nobody changed the code, that is the landlord’s obligation, not a favour.
Keep the old hardware. If you do swap a lock out with permission, box the original and keep it. Landlords generally want it back on the door at the end of the tenancy.

How Smart Locks Fail, and What To Do
Knowing the failure modes is most of living with one.
Battery dies. The most common failure by a distance. Most locks warn you for weeks first, and most people ignore it. Thread and Bluetooth locks last far longer than Wi-Fi. Keep spares in the house, and know where the physical key or the emergency contacts are.
Shows as unresponsive in the app. Reported specifically on Aqara U400 and U50 locks in Apple Home, usually traced to lost Thread connection to the hub, an authentication conflict, or firmware lag. Check the hub first, then the firmware.
Random battery death. Reported on at least one Yale Assure 2 Touch model, dying with the battery reading over 90 percent. Firmware and warranty territory, not something to diagnose on your doorstep.
Grinding, jamming, or locking halfway. Almost always the door, not the lock. See the first section. Schlage models have jam detection, which tells you it is happening but does not fix the cause.
Codes stop working or auto lock fires at the wrong time. Often a low battery presenting as something else. Change the battery before assuming worse.
Internet goes down. A Wi-Fi lock loses remote access. A Thread lock keeps working locally. The keypad works either way on both.
When to call somebody. If the door needs adjusting, if the bore is wrong, if the lock is grinding, or if you have spent forty minutes in an app. Troubleshooting runs $90 to $180, and a technician who tests the door before opening the app is the one you want.
Batteries, Heat and Wichita Falls Summers
A local note nobody else makes.
Wichita Falls runs triple digits for long stretches, and the Hotter’N Hell Hundred is named after August weather here. Heat is hard on batteries and on plastic housings. A lock on a west or south facing door takes direct sun through the worst part of the afternoon, and it will not match the battery life on the box.
Practical steps. Expect shorter battery intervals than advertised on a sun exposed door. Change batteries before summer rather than during it. Consider a Thread model on exposed doors for the longer baseline. If you have a rechargeable battery lock, like the Eufy S230 with its 8 month cell, charge it in spring.
And in winter, the same door swings the other way. Cold slows batteries and the clay contracts, so a lock that was fine in October can start reporting low power and struggling with the bolt in January. Both are normal here and both have simple answers.
