Which Type of Car Key Do You Have
This decides the price more than anything else, and most people are unsure. It takes ten seconds to work out.
Plain metal key. No chip, no buttons, nothing electronic. Generally vehicles older than about 1998. The cheapest key there is, because it is metal and a cutting machine.
Transponder key. Looks like a plain key with a fatter plastic head. A chip inside that head talks to the immobilizer before the engine will start. If you have ever had a key that opens the door but will not start the car, this is why.
Remote head key. A transponder key with the lock and unlock buttons built into the same plastic head.
Flip key, sometimes called a switchblade. The blade folds into the fob body and springs out with a button.
Separate fob and key. A fob for the remote functions with a mechanical key alongside, sometimes hidden inside the fob body.
Push to start proximity key. No blade goes into anything. The car senses the fob in your pocket and a button starts the engine. There is nearly always an emergency blade hidden in the fob, and a hidden slot or pad in the car for when the fob battery dies. Worth knowing where both are before you need them.
